Anita Saarkessian

Anita Sarkeesian, a Canadian/American media critic is also a public speaker. She was the creator of Feminist Frequency a website that provides commentary and videos on portrayals of women in popular cultural. Anita Sarkeesian, a Canadian-American journalist and critic who has been awarded awards in her field, is an activist blogger. Feminist Frequency is an educational site for non-profit organizations that investigates representations of women in narratives from popular culture. She's dedicated to breaking down stereotypes of women as they appear in popular media. Furthermore, she seeks to educate people about the online abuse directed towards women as well as marginalized groups of society. Sarkeesian graduated with a master's degree in the field of political and social thought at York University. As a public speaker, she is highly sought after and has been a speaker at TEDxWomenXOXO as well as the United Nations Broadband Working Group. She was interested in feminist issues, gender and gender equality since a young age. As of 2009, as she was still at the university level, she launched the site Feminist Frequency. The woman was determined and had a plan to make a web series to study the role of gender in video games. But, she discovered herself as the victim of an online harassment campaign. Although the incident did hinder her, instead it only strengthened her resolve as a feminist media journalist. In recognition of the many contributions she has made to feminist movements, she has been an award winner. Anita Sarkeesian is an award winning media critic and the founder of Feminist Frequency an educational non-profit that explores the representations of women in popular culture storylines.
